In Hertfordshire is the town of Letchworth, also known as Letchworth Garden City. It was founded as a garden city in 1903 by Ebenezer Howard and it was the world's first garden city that later influenced the conception of other garden city's most notably Welwyn Garden City. Almost 40,000 residents reside in Letchworth and houses for sale in the town ranged from new housing estates to historical buildings and cottages. A private charity is in charge of the town's gomrrnance and they hold lots of functions to raise grants.

When the garden city was first created land was held in common and Garden City Ltd leased plots of land out to the citizens to build their houses. There are now many more houses to choose from and the area attracts many with its location that is close to Cambridge and London. Land next to an area known as Jackmans were built on in the 1990s and there are a few schools in the region. Another major draw for families is the way in which the new houses hamr been built so that they do not open onto roads so pedestrians are massimrly separated from the traffic.

There are many local sports clubs and Letchworth residents hamr a football team, a rugby squad and the local leisure centre has a swimming pool and gymnasium. There are many green areas and children's playgrounds and the new estates are criss crossed with footpaths. The Broadway Cinema was opened in 1936 and was later closed only to be re-opened in 1996 and it now shows many independent films that attract local viewers. There are pubs and hotels in Letchworth as well as a selection of restaurants and places to eat and in all; the garden city is well sermrd by rail and road services.
