Letchworth Garden City is better known as just Letchworth and when it was founded in 1903 it was the world's first garden city. It later influenced other garden cities like Welwyn Garden City and others across the world including as far flung as Australia. The town is run by a private charity that organises and control all of the funding and planning in the same way a local government would. Letchworth is home to nearly 40,000 people and they can make use of the many amenities in the town including the Broadway Cinema and numerous cafés, bars and restaurants that are mainly located in the centre of Letchworth. Jackmans is a new housing development and it was built in the 1990s. Although not a unique concept, the estate is pedestrian friendly with all of the houses backing out to footpaths rather than streets or roads. The leisure centre in Letchworth has a swimming pool as well as squash courts and a gym and there are a few hotels scattered around the town for visitors to make use of. The majority of the entertainment venues are located in the centre of the town and staying with its name; the garden city is home to numerous green areas that are well maintained. The region is served by buses and a nearby rail line making it simple to travel around the area.
